Derek Jeter named Sports Illustrated 2009 Sportsman of the year

Posted by mike on Saturday Dec 5, 2009 Under General

Even if you absolutely hate the New York Yankees you still probably have a special place in your heart for the captain Derek Jeter. You can be in a coma and still agree that Derek Jeter is the definition of class – both on and off the baseball diamond. The way he represents Major League Baseball, the way he represents the city of New York, and oh yeah by the way the Turn 2 Foundation (which has given away over 10 million dollars to help children stay clean). Since his rookie season in 1996, Derek Jeter has been the most consistent, clutch baseball player and the most stand up role model in the sports today.

Since being named Rookie of the Year in 1996,  Derek Jeter has not missed many accolades for his tenacious, finesse style of play. His first full season in the major leagues he was a big contributor of taking the team in pinstripes all the way for his first World Series Championship. This season Jeter added his fifth championship ring to his mantle by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. Jeter has won the All-Star MVP award and the World Series MVP award in the same season, the only player ever to do so. Not to mention he has been selected to the Major League Baseball All-Star game ten times. After a very memorable 2009 season, Jeter won his fourth Gold Glove and fourth Silver Slugger in a season where hit batted .334 with a .406 OBP.  He was second in the American League in hits with 212. Thanks to his batting prowess, Derek also won the Hank Aaron Award as the best hitter in the AL. He received the Roberto Clemente Award for his commitment to service in the community.

Derek is the first New York Yankee player ever chosen to Sports Illustrated Sportsman Award. They started this award in 1954 and he joins the likes of Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong.   For playing on a team with so many future Hall of Famers this should be something for them to be thankful for, having such a leader as a captain. Wanna be like Mike??? Maybe it should be” Air Jeter” or “I wanna be like Derek” ???

What a career – and it does not look like he is going to hang them up anytime soon. You can tell he is having a blast playing for the best franchise in sports. Not to mention he is the New York Yankees all time hits leader, passing Lou Gehrig this season. Looking forward to many more seasons to see what is next for this thirty five year old. Maybe President of the United States?

This is going to be the biggest game of the year in college football , Alabama Crimson Tide vs. The Florida Gators.  The game is being played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta Georgia so lets throw any confusions about home field advantage out the window. Its going to be action packed and  looks like a match-up made for Hollywood .  Nick Saban vs. Urban Myers, Tim Tebow vs. Greg McElroy, not sure if the Georgia Dome has enough room for the ego’s between these players and these schools. This is definitely going to be an a game that will be viewed on ESPN instant classics.  Get ready for a power packed, edge of your seat, back and forth, good old fashion grid iron battle. I believe although we have two college  football teams that can score plenty of points that this game will be low scoring football game and the team that has the better defense wins this game. I see both quarterbacks having to put the football in the air to maintain possession and to score.  The line on this game in Florida Gators -5 1/2 points which is surprising to me because although Florida hasn’t lost since being upset by Ole Miss, Alabama has a very impressive football team. Being that Alabama is ranked number two in the country I would have had to guess the line should have been between Florida Gators minus 3 , 3 1/2. I have a hard time believing that Tim Tebow is going to go out with a loss but does Florida  cover 5 1/2? Be sure to know we will have this match-up as one of our guaranteed plays tomorrow.  Even if you don’t end up wagering on this game, I certainly think you should try to watch it on TV.  This will be a game for the books.  I know I’ll be watching it.  I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
